# AMS 40th Radar Conference Open Radar Short Course

Hi folks,
I wanted to start a discussion regarding an Open Radar Short Course (or something similar) at the 40th AMS Radar Conference in Aug/Sep 2023. I spoke to Scott Collis and am planning to work with Max on exactly what we want to focus the course on. We can make this a sounding board to further get a sense of what folks liked about ERAD22’s course, as well as the upcoming AMS Annual course. I look forward to working with you!

I especially like the fact that the previous short course covered both the Py-ART (DOE) and LROSE (NSF) ecosystems.
You’ll have a mixture of attendees who come from widely varying backgrounds and ability levels. With the large footprint of the radar conference, it might make sense to divide the short course up into “beginner” and “advanced” modules.

I too am not sure whether I’ll be able to attend, but I would like BALTRAD to be represented at the course. Hoping I can find a younger talent who can step in for me. In the meantime, please count me in.

I’d be happy to help teaching using MetPy to integrate plots and calculations from other datasets (e.g. station plots) into other radar analyses.

Sorry for the radio silence; end of year is nuts! I think we need to draft a list of topics and make a decision _very_ soon regarding if there will be two different modules/courses (e.g., intro and advanced or just one main course). Technically the proposal for short courses closes on 12/31. If there were two courses, they would likely need to be taught at the same time, but I need to check on that. I will gather information regarding timing/rooms/etc. to help gauge how much material you will be able to fit in. I will let you know what AMS tells me!

@jmkurdzo Following up here - I was out the past two weeks on Holiday Shutdown. I think we are thinking one course, with similar topics to the 2022 ERAD Short Course

@mgrover1 No problem at all - we just found out this morning that there is an official application link for AMS short course proposals, and the deadline is softer for these. The craziness is getting crazier, and we’re still 8 months away from this thing! If there’s any way at all you can get at least a _general_ proposal submitted by the end of next week, it would be awesome.

Hello All!
We have some updates on the AMS Open Radar Short Course
- The course is scheduled for Sunday August 26 8:00AM to 3:45PM US Central Time
- It will be hybrid, enabling both remote teachers and students
- We will be holding a planning meeting within the next couple of weeks
Here is [a link to the planning document](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Ck7ygeKSxAK12mYJuUpGbumt67LNz0yOmPQSEzrBA10/edit?usp=sharing) you will notice it is a bit different from the ERAD 2022 short course, with the additional focus on multi-doppler retrievals.

Nice news. If you could lend some minutes to Daniel Wolfensberger or myself to show Pyrad during the Py-ART hands-on we would appreciate it.
Otherwise I will do my best to convince the management and be there but I cannot promise anything yet.
Are you planning an in-person developers meeting as in Locarno?

I plan on attending the conference. I am quite new to radar data but I have been using wradlib for the past months and I am following the new changes to the package. I could take over the hands-on with wradlib, what do you think @kmuehlbauer ? I’ll fill the document and poll.
