PrePEP 2025 Open Radar Science Short Course - Review

Dear All,

first I apologize for not announcing this short course beforehand. Nevertheless I’m going to link it here to feature our combined efforts of enforcing Open Radar Science. The course

has been held right before the

I want to especially thank @mgrover1 and @aladinor for approving usage of the Open Radar Science Introduction, xradar basics and Analysis-Ready Cloud-Optimized Datasets notebooks material (from ERAD2024). This material was adapted to use data from 2021-07-14, the event which caused severe flooding in western Germany and Belgium.

In the course we (thanks @JulianGiles) shortly highlighted affiliated packages but had our main focus on xradar — xradar 0.9.0 documentation and applications showing the use of data from the Radar Network of The Deutscher Wetterdienst on an inhouse JuypterLab server of the IfG Meteorology Section mostly using wradlib. We’ve put emphasize on Clutter and Beamblockage, Gridding and Compositing and ZDR Offset Correction.

Although the used data isn’t publicly available the rendered notebooks will hopefully give enough information to reproduce the functionality with data from https://opendata.dwd.de or any other open radar data.

Finally, thanks to all who are involved in constantly working on updating our common ecosystem.

Kai
